Whats YOUR opinion???

I need your help. My mother-in-law is looking at buying a new sewing machine. She wants to try her hand at quilting. What would you look for in machine for beginning quilting & embroidery. She's looking for something in the $400 to $500 range.

  1. What does she have (if anything) now?

I would go to a dealer and try out several and see what I liked. Maybe see if they have any trade ins that you can get a great deal on. A good dealer will stand behind them. Dont' you know a dealer in the area?

  2. I LOVE my Brother Sewing Machine!!! I paid around $1,000.00 (Canadian) for it, but I've been told that there are less expensive models, in the USA.

My friend bought a Brother, in Florida, for 1 or 2 hundred. What we BOTH liked on our machines is that you don't need a foot pedal to sew on it. You can use on of the buttons on the front to stop/start it. *s*

And yes, as the previous poster wrote... she should test drive a few, first.

Hope she picks a good one!

  3. Good luck....and maybe you should let Brooke be the one to help with this. If the mother-in-law ends up with a machine she doesn't like, you don't want to be the one she blames....LOL

  4. Greg actually posted for me as more people read his blog. Mom doesn't know he's helping. She has a machine that she's owned before I was born - guessing 38 to 40 years now. She's had it in the shop alot and it's stitching is so tight now that she can't sew with it. The only dealer is an hour away from her - she's 3 hours away from me and the shops I know. We've looked online and I've told her about machines that I know about. I just bought my little cheap-o at Walmart and figured I run it till it died and the hopefully get something wonderful. The only thing she has said so far is she wants to make a t-shirt quilt and she'd like to have a machine that can make it though 3 layers of denim. She doesn't want anything that takes alot of effort to learn but wants a quality item. She used to make denim bags so I thought the embrodiery machine would be fun for her. Really want to know what features it is that you all can't live without - what makes life easier type thing.

  5. Unless you find a great deal on a Pfaff (not likely) she may need a different machine for the denim layers. That is really tough on a machine. There are some machines out there that can do it, but generally they aren't great for piecing/quilting.

  6. I Love my Juki 98QE, it pieces beautifully, quilts phenomonally, and can more than handle the layers of jeans as it's a semi professional machine. It doesn't do any embroidery, but would do great free machine embroidery! There may be a cost implication though, it was expensive here in the UK! Good luck Brooke!

  7. I bought a great little Janome on Overstock. I take it with me when we go to the beach and stay. My aunt has an expensive Jamone and mine will do almost anything hers does.
